Obligatory Conditions to Perform Hajj

It is mirror clear in Islam of who is obligated to perform Hajj and who is not. Certain conditions need to be fulfilled to step in towards an accepted Hajj.

  • To be a Muslim – The most prior condition is being a Muslim with heart and actions. Any blasphemer cannot obligate for Hajj. He can only after being converting into a Muslim. Hajj is accepted by Allah when it is performed with a correct belief and successively attains religious duties.

  • Age Accountability – A child should be able to mentally understand the questions asked of him. Although, this applies to a pubescent child who can perform Hajj after he reaches puberty and sanity. A non-pubescent child who is not of sound mind is not accountable for this holy journey. It is called the age of Tamiyz (7 years), in which a child should be able to distinguish between good and bad.

  • Sanity – Any insane person by health or my mind is not required to perform this obligation.
  • Slavery Free – This obligation does not apply to any slave or anyone who is prison bound.
  • Financial Stability – A pilgrim who can easily afford the travel and stay at Makkah can opt for this obligation. It is not valid for the poor man. He must not be in debt and can also pay for his lodging and clothing. Besides this, he must be able to support his parents and family from his departure until his return.
  • Mahram for Woman – The Prophet (P.B.U.H) forbade a woman in his times to travel to a distance longer than 24 hours accompanied by a Mahram. She can either take the Mahram with him or any trustworthy woman to make it for the pilgrimage.
